Bugum, The Fire Festival of Prophet

The Dagomba honor their ancestors with a festival called Bugum, which means “fire”. According to oral traditions, when the Ark of Noah landed at the end of the floods the occupants lit torches to find their way out and around. While the lion and the crocodile became royal symbols, the elephant and the eagle now represent the 2 main political parties, respectively the NPP and the NDC. The elephant won the December 2016 presidential election.
